Omaha is not Texas

The Texas Hold’em players, when they play their first hand of Omaha Hold’em, are satisfied with knowing that instead of two cards they are four and that you have to use two of the four cards of the hand to form the move. With this they believe they are ready to play and apply the knowledge they have of Texas Hold’em, believing that they are good for Omaha.

From here, nothing can go well. Omaha is not Texas and they are games as different as they look alike.

Two cards against four cards

Playing Omaha you receive four cards, of which you must use two to form your play. So, with your four cards you have six possible combinations of two cards with which to form your play. You could consider that you are playing Texas with six pairs of initial cards, but with an important nuance, it is necessary to use two cards of the hand to form the play; If, for example, your four initial cards are each one of a suit, you can not have color ever.

If in Texas Hold’em it is important that the two cards are good, in Omaha it is necessary that the four cards have some relation between them. Hands that may seem good to you like Q ♥ Q ♠ 4 ♣ 2 ♦ , because you believe that the pair of ladies has a value similar to the one you have in Texas, are really hands that you have to shoot immediately and wait for the next deal. With this hand, the only real option to take the pot is with a trio of ladies, and this trio will seldom win because it will be against top trios, ladders or colors.

Make sure your four cards have several winning options, remember that in Omaha poker you need a stronger hand than in Texas to win.

You can start by limiting yourself to playing this kind of hands.

  • Large pairs with the possibility of two colors: A ♥ A ♠ 8 ♥ 9 ♠,
  • Four cards in a row, better with colors: 10 ♥ 9 ♠ 8 ♥ 7 ♠.
  • A couple with two cards in a row: 9 ♥ 9 ♠ 8 ♥ 7 ♠.

In Omaha you get in trouble very fast. It is a game in which each card changes the destiny of the hand. Carry yourself with a powerful preflop hand.

Omaha is a game of nuts

In Omaha it is normal for someone to have the possible nuts. If there is a possibility of color, someone will appear with ace color, if there is a couple at the table, poker is not strange although it is normal to have full and when there is a possibility of a ladder, some player takes it.

While in Texas it is difficult for someone to have the nuts, in Omaha it is just the other way around, it is complicated that there is no one with the nuts.

Various ways to win

It is important to have several ways to win the hand. The “redraws” are what differentiate a winning player from a losing one. In Hold’em, it is not usual for this to happen, but in Omaha, it does not become common, but it happens very often.

The “redraws” are the projects that make you can form a play superior to the one you already have.

An example: you have 10 ♥ 9 ♠ 8 ♥ 7 ♠ and on the table, on the turn you complete your staircase. 6 ♥ 5 ♠ 4 ♥ . You would tie with any opponent who had a 7 and a 8. But when you had the 9, if a 7 or an 8 came out, you would make a higher ladder, and if a heart came out, you would have color. Two plays that in the case of being tied on the flop, would make you take your hand.

This is the reason why we recommend that the four cards have to do with each other. There will be times that you will tie ladder, and for having suited cards you will be able to improve to color. Others will have a trio, and you could improve to full, like all trios, but also to color; thus having more options to overcome a rival with a possible ladder.

Position. Position. Position.

Playing Texas Hold’em you will have realized the importance of the position. As soon as you play a little Omaha you will realize that the position is even more important.

Imagine yourself in a boat against a single rival in which you have the position. If the opponent bets on the flop, being a Pot Limit game, is limited to, at best, making a bet of the size of the pot. But this bet opens the door for you to make a raise of up to 4 times the pot. It is clear that having a position is much easier to make a big boat when we are interested.

Always look at what position you are in and how you can manage to be the last to speak. It is the key to this game, to be the last to speak from the flop.

The boats are huge

By dealing four cards to each player, there are more possible combinations, so there are more players who believe they can take the pot. The bets are going up and at the end of the hand the boats are gigantic. It is normal for boats to be 200 blinds.

Therefore, mistakes cost more. You go rolling in your hand, you go in and in the end you see that you have delivered all the chips with the second nuts.

Play hands that can form nuts. On the flop, play projects that may become nuts; forget about color at ten, the staircase below or the third trio on the table. Or nuts or nothing.

Play directly

One last tip for when you start playing Omaha, play straight. Do not bluff, do not slowplay; Limítate to bet when you have a very strong hand, that surely someone with a project will pay you. And, when you are the one who has the project, if you do not complete it, you give your hand, you will have very few occasions in which it is profitable to bluff.

The trick is to get the most value out of our best hands and lose the least when we have a worse hand than the opponent.

Omaha Pot Limit is a very fun game when you learn the basic strategy, each month we will give you some brushstrokes so you can improve, but meanwhile, you can sit at the practice game tables to try the game without risking money. Many new players can not read their hand correctly, and not knowing the hand that you have got can make you lose a lot of money, so practice at the practice tables until you see yourself loose. Once you see that you defend yourself, you can sit at the real money tables.
